Exhibition “La Ruta del Tabaco” Opens in Holguin

The exhibition “La Ruta del Tabaco” ( The Route of the Tobacco), which includes photographs, old documents, ashtrays, pipes and other elements, opened Sunday in the city of Holguin, as part of the activities for the Ibero-American Culture Fiesta taking place in this eastern province.

Personal work of Miguel Cabrera, a member of the Cuban Association of Vitolfilica, the exhibition is a collection of hundreds of pieces that allow an insight into the history of tobacco since its discovery by Europeans in 1492 to date.

At the opening, critic Ernesto Galban explained that cigar band and tools for manufacturing a cigar is a valuable graphic testimony to reflect events of past centuries, figures in literature and politics, or just by the landscapes that adorn them.

He noted the importance to observe closely the samples being exhibited at the Museum La Periquera of this northeastern city, as well as ancient documents of the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

He also commented that it is no coincidence that "La Ruta del Tabaco "is included within the activities of the Ibero-American Culture Festival, because it was precisely in this region of the island where European sailors that discovered America met for the first time this aromatic product.

According to Cabrera, bringing these pieces together has been a task to which he has spent decades of his life, and now he is happy to present them to the public in his home province.

As an exhibitor, Cabrera has participated in events related to the world of tobacco, including several editions of the “Festival del Habano” and the International Symposium of Havana cigars.
